Belt Rank System

There are different belt colors worn by many different systems and schools in the Martial arts.

The majority are based on the same principle, no matter what color is associated to the rank or grade of student.

Generally there are ten levels of 'kyu' or student. The student begins as the 10 kyu or level and earns each new rank level until they attain the 1st kyu or Ikkyu level. Some systems assign different color belts to each level, some use fewer colors and add some type of stripe or indicator to show progress within a color group.

In Kyokushin's early days only the white, brown, and black belts were used. The green belt was soon added.

Our school has used the four color system since our beginnings in the 60's here in California. It is shown below.

White Belt: 10th kyu plain, 9th kyu with one gold bar,8th kyu with two gold bars,7th kyu with 3 gold bars.

Rank names are Jukyu(10),Kukyu(9),Hachikyu(8),Hichikyu(7)

Green Belt: 6th kyu with one gold bar, 5th kyu with two gold bars, 4th kyu with 3 gold bars

Rank names are Rokukyu (6), Gokyu (5), Shikyu (4)

Brown Belt: 3rd kyu with one gold bar, 2nd kyu with 2 gold bar, 1st kyu with 3 gold bars.

Rank names are Sankyu (3), Nikyu (2), Ikkyu (1)

From here the belts become black and the system becomes different.

All belt colors and kyu ranks joining from another system are considered white relevant to black. Your skills may advance you quickly when you join a new system or school, but your belt starts at white until you prove your abilities and skills.
